Gospel in Action Update | March 1, 2014

Much has taken place since the last update. Board member LaVern Tueth and Charlie Hale—both from Iowa, arrived in Malawi on January 1. God called these men to leave their home and families for months to design and construct our base facility in Lumbadzi, Malawi. They have done a great job stretching our limited resources and going far beyond what I thought could be accomplished. The shell of the main building is basically complete with the roof scheduled to go on during this coming week. There will be photos of the construction on our web site gospel-in-action.org as well as the facebook page of Gospel in Action.

LaVern returned home a couple of days ago while Charlie remains and was joined by wife Tracy this last week.

There is a great opening line in the movie Bella – “ if you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans”. My wife Allison, granddaughter Carrie and I had planned on going to Malawi in March along with three other Mainers. As many of you know that on February 1 I sustained some serious injuries while working in the woods. My recovery period will be a couple of months, hence no March trip for me, Alli, or Carrie.

Charlie and Tracy will be joined by the three from Maine on March 4. When David Thurlow, Betsy Shaw and Eli Cushman arrive the team will immediately resume the bore hole / Gospel work. We already have a list of villages that need our help – a long list. All will return mid-March.

I am looking forward to see how God uses these five plus our Malawians Ruben, Phillip and Angela as they do the work of the Gospel in villages.

Again I am deeply moved and appreciate each one of you who prays and for each one who gives. In addition to the bore hole repairing, funds have been given to purchase a few hundred Bibles and to help many families who are suffering with hunger.

It is cool to see God move people with compassion and their response by giving. (see 1 John 3:16-18) It is encouraging to hear about the 10 yr. old boy who gave $10.00 for hunger relief and his 3 yr. old brother who gave 35 cents. God bless all of you.

In my last update I listed as a need a vehicle in Malawi. Because of the building project I kind of put a vehicle purchase on the back burner. God however had other plans. He just about dumped a great 10 passenger vehicle in our lap for a mere fraction of the cost that I assumed we needed. We were able to purchase this 2002 vehicle for about $2000.00. This will keep the borehole ministry going all year long not just when Americans go and provide a rented vehicle.

So how does my situation affect the ministry in Malawi? Well as I have stated before this work is about exalting Jesus as we go to the villages, help them with water, hunger, provide Bibles and share the Gospel. Sure, God has used me in putting this ministry together, but it is not about me. It is His ministry. The leadership needed for the work going on right now has been provided for by others stepping up while I recover!

Right now I believe I will be going to Malawi in November.

There is much more going on so I will give more detail in the next update which I will put out after the team returns in mid-March.

For now that is all except for these things I hope you will pray for.

  1. Safe passage for the team flying out on Monday the 3rd
  2. That Malawi villagers will welcome not only our help with their physical needs but will welcome and embrace the Gospel
  3. Our vehicle needs just one government official to sign a document so we can take possession and use it. He seems to be balking—probably wants a bribe—we do not want to go that route pray that he signs off –we need it by Tuesday
  4. Good health for all the team including the Malawians
  5. That God will be lifted up and glorified through all that is done .

Now to Him who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think—according to the power that works in you—to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and forever. Amen (Ephesians 3:20,21)

Grace & Peace, John Boyington
